G.'s " tribute to our friend strikes me as very just, but I should like to add two points : (1) Mr. LytteltOn was a perfect specimen of what is meant by a " gentleman," both in the superficial and in the deeper sense of that ill-used word. (2) He had a strong and genuine faculty of humour, and saw the absurd side of life with keen, though usually unspoken, enjoyment. As I am about writing, please let ins express my sincere regret that, owing to insufficient notice, I was prevented from attending the memorial service.—I am,
