Martin Luther King
Sir: 'If the moderates fail to act now history will have to record that the greatest tragedy of this period of social transition was not the strident clamour of the bad people, but the appalling silence of the good people.' Thus wrote Martin Luther King in 1958, and the same thing could be said in Britain in 1968.
For good or ill we have a multi-racial society and nothing short of unthinkable Hitlerian methods is going to change this fact. But if it is to be for good then it is crucially important that' everyone of whatever race who desires a harmonious and mutually cooperative society should be prepared to work for it. It is not something that is going to happen by itself but it is something that we could make happen.
The Martin Luther King Foundation exists with the prime object of bringing about a happy and harmonious multi-racial society in Great Britain. May I beg all your readers who want to support this aim to write to us. Mr Powell bases his arguments upon the number of letters that he receives endorsing his views. Please ensure that we receive many more for ours. Then we may be able to demonstrate to the whole world that the races can live together in freedom, peace and genuine equality. No contri- bution to world peace could be more worth making.
