The Carpet from Bagdad. By Harold MacGrath. With illus- trations
by Andre Castaigne. (Gay and Hancock. 6s.)—This is the account of an amusing and unsuccessful plot made by a set of American adventurers for the confusion of a most respectable and estimable young gentleman engaged in the carpet trade. The reader will rather doubt whether any one so weak of purpose as the person who calls himself "Ryanne " could possibly have succeeded in stealing the sacred rug "The Ghiordes" from Bagdad, but as this feat is the foundation of the story the possibility of such an exploit must be conceded. A further adventure, in which the innocent carpet merchant and Fortune, the equally innocent daughter of the chief female conspirator, are engaged with llyarme himself, is exciting and diverting, and altogether the book has an authentic savour of the East which makes it well worth reading.
