Royal plant denied
Sir: According to 'The royal confidants' (13 July), I had lunch with Prince Michael of Kent in the Royal Garden Hotel during which he gave me information concerning the Prince of Wales which resulted in my front-page story on the marriage of the Prince and Princess of Wales published in the Daily Mail, 2 July.
This is complete fantasy — I have never lunched (or dined) with Prince Michael and the only time I have been at the Royal Garden Hotel this year was as a guest of Sir John Junor, nor has the Prince ever discus- sed anything with me but the game of squash, for which we both have a passion — he is the President of my club, the RAC.
Before going into print with such an invention, I would have hoped that the author might have employed the basic journalistic courtesy of checking the item with me. I am surprised that he did not choose to do so — especially as he passes the (open) door of my office every day and is connected to my desk by an internal telephone system.
