Something New; or, Tales for the Times. Edited by E.

W. Jacob. (Faithfull.)—This volume, which is edited by a late captain in the 99th Regiment, consists of a collection of tales by various writers, which are published by subscription for the benefit of the Lancashire Fund. We are afraid that whatever success it may meet with will 'cc attributable to its charitable purpose rather than to the intrinsic merit of its con- tents. None of the tales are more than barely tolerable, and some— notably one called "The White Lady "—are inexcusably bad. What can we hope for from a writer who, professing to repeat a story in the actual words of a common "navvy," speaks of a parish constable as "the grandiliquous (sic) borough functionary."
