Freedom and tyranny
Sir: In your issue of 13 March there were two articles, by Timothy Garton Ash and Aleksa Djilas, which between them state the whole anti-Communist case. The former's description of Mr Mieczyslaw Rakowski, the bogus 'liberal', delineates the new tyranny of the first generation arriviste, with his total preoccupation with defending the New Class. Let us never again have illu-
sions about such usurpers who try to sit on a great historic country.
Aleksa Djilas shows once and for all the absurdity of associating the name of Tito with academic objectives. Most of us, I sup- pose, greatly admire the Marshal's military courage and are grateful for his defiance of Stalin. But that the University of London should think fit to use his name for a Fellowship 'boggles the imagination', as Mr Haig would say. One can only hope that the former British ambassadors to Belgrade who signed the appeal will have second thoughts about permanently connecting a free university with a Communist apparat- chik, however congenial a colleague he may have been to some British people and however useful to our nation.
