Old Bansteadians
Sir: Following Simon Courtauld's article on the White Mischief affair (`Mischief, mur- der and multiple adultery', 13 February), I can confirm that Juanita Carberry was beaten frequently by her father, often for nothing. I recall one occasion in Kenya when J.C. (her father) was going to beat her, and my youngest sister asked why when she had done nothing wrong. J.C. replied, 'No, but she will have done by the time I get back!'
I and my two younger sisters were all at the same school as Juanita in Banstead, Surrey . She and my sisters were all asked to leave this school at the same time for bad behaviour, but I was allowed to stay.
Being a few years older, I probably knew Joss Erroll better than Juanita did, as he used to play a lot of bridge with my mother. All the main characters in these episodes are now dead, but it seems a pity that Diana, when she died only a few years ago, did not leave any papers which might have shed more light on these events of 50 years ago. Now that they have been aired ad nau- seam, and at least some of the inaccuracies rectified, I hope that they may at last be permitted to rest in peace.
