Bradford charade

Sir: Dr Hansford-Miller (November 6) is absolutely right, but it is unlikely that universities will change. The arrogance and selfsatisfaction that characterise most of the university establishment inhibit self-criticism, and the charade of the visitorial jurisdiction is no protection for students.

In one notorious case a few years ago a Reader at London University, who as supervisor approved a doctoral thesis for submission, was then one of the three examiners who unanimously rejected it. Neither the University nor the Lords of the Privy Council thought it necessary to explain such an anomaly — or offer any redress.

It is, after all, much more fun to devote time and attention to awarding honorary doctorates than to encourage true learning.
