The Royal Naval Division. By Douglas Jerrold. (Hutchinson and Co.
21s. net.) Mr. Jerrold has written a very good account of the dis- tinguished part played in the recent War by the Royal Naval Division, to which. Mr. Winston Churchill has contributed an enthusiastic preface. It was the first of the non-Regular divisions to take an active part in the fighting, being originally composed of naval reservists who were not required by the warships. Part of it was first rushed out to Antwerp, then it was sent to Gallipoli, and finally it did some conspicuous work in the last two years of the fighting in France. Perhaps the most curious pages of the book are those which describe the effort of the Staff to militarize the division after General Paris was wounded, which went far to neutralize its usefulness as a fighting unit for at least six months.
