Arms for Israel
Sir: That the Foreign Office should prohibit the export of arms to the Arab aggressors is right and proper, but their denial to Israel, siirrounded by enemies and fighting for her existence, seems symptomatic of contemporary double-standards.
Israel would not have extended her boundaries in 1967 had she not been attacked by Egypt, and it must be borne in mind that to the Moslem Arabs the extermination of Israel would all be part of a legitimate jehad (religious war), whereas the Israelis have no such intention in regard to their attackers.
Although the problem is highly complex, the refusal of arms to Israel, while Russia is directly and indirectly supplying the Arabs, by whom Israel is surrounded, creates the impression that too many Britons prefer oily to clean hands.
