Market and Marxism
Sir: C. J. Arthur (October 13) tells us to forget EEC "quibbles about the margins of national sovereignty" and to vote to keep out Labour's Marxist programme. But in a few months we have seen Europe ship our butter off to Russia, our beef to Germany, abolish our millenia-old money and weights and measures systems, impose larger and noisier juggernauts, and plan a ban on British beer, sausages and fresh Poultry, with full union and the elimination of any remaining autonomy by 1980. Is this a marginal quibble?
In a similar situation the French said better Hitler than Blum," and apPOinted Petain and Laval to act as the Heath of their day. At least they succeeded in getting rid of Blum's popular front socialism, though at a dreadful cost, and those who supported this are as discredited as pro-Europeans will be here soon. But Mr Arthur is asking us to vote for Heath, a man who has introduced more nationalisation, more control of the economy, more inflation, More alien immigration, more violent crime than ever Wilson dreamed of. Therefore, sir, I follow your admirable lead (which I hope your successor will Maintain) and will vote Labour, first and foremost in the hope of restoring MY country's freedom, and secondly to reduce the pace of socialisation.
