LETTERS Why apologise?

Sir: Notwithstanding the famous crash of that Mercedes in a Paris underpass, I bought a Mercedes for my wife on the Fri- day of the following week. That evening I noticed with satisfaction the advertisement for Mercedes-Benz on your inside cover (6 September), in the knowledge that my wife would stay sober and within the speed limit. Two pages later I read, with even greater satisfaction, the perfect balance and per- spective of your leading article. The follow- ing week (13 September) I read an apology for publication of the advertisement and am astonished. What a pity that The Specta- tor has, after all, succumbed to the irra- tional, not to say ridiculous, upsurge of Dianamania, itself stirred up by the media, and for which the media is now being right- ly criticised in some small, but still rational, corners of the press.
