Mr Cecil Doherty
We stated in last week's issue that words used by Mr Tony Palmer in his account of the Oz Trial published in the Spectator dated July 31 could have been taken to refer to a group of accredited correspondents at the Old Bailey, and said that nothing written in the Spectator by Mr Palmer or by anyone else referred to these Central Criminal Court correspondents. We regret to learn that Mr Palmer's criticisms of the journalists covering the trial have in fact been understood to refer to the regular accredjted reporters at the Old Bailey, one of whom is Mr Cecil Doherty, and we wish unreservedly to withdraw any suggestion that these criticisms could apply to them. We are extremely sorry for the distress which has been caused to Mr Doherty and his colleagues, and apologise to them.
