Sir: I was disturbed to read Auberon Waugh's somewhat frenzied
and clearlY misleading attacks upon his Holiness Pone Paul VI. Despite your writer's ramblings. Archbishop Lefebvre was suspended from all his duties a divinis, on the fundamental issue of deliberate opposition and defiance of the Pope and the Church. Following the Vatican Congregation of Bishops' ten-day ultirnaturn, for the Archbishop to renounce his stubborn disobedience, and submit to the authority of the Church, sadly but inevitablY he was suspended. Archbishop Lefebvre's attempt to set himself up as the supreme judge of tradition, and establish his own authority above that of the successor of Peter and the Church' could have had no other result. Moreover it is unthinkable that St Pius V. a great defender of papal authority, would ever con' done such blatant disobedience of the 1101Y Father. Pope Paul VI has proved to be 3 courageous Pope in guiding the ship of St Peter through the difficult and turbulent waters of our time, despite these unforunate attempts to divide the Church and challenge the authority of the Holy See.
