THE PARIS COMMUNE OF 1871.

SIR,—In addition to the work mentioned by your correspondent in last Saturday's issue, there are two recent and important Histories of the Commune, one by M. Lissagaray, and the other by M. Arthur Arnould (published by M. Henri Kistemaeckers 60 Boulevard du Nord, Brussels), both written by prominent participators in the events they describe. The work of Lissagaray has, I believe, been recently placed on the index expurgatorius of the German Government.

A good synoptic history of this most momentous politico- social movement remains, however, still a desideratum, as each historian has hitherto confined himself to personal experiences or special departments of the Administration, and has thus failed to give at once an adequate and comprehensive, survey of the
