To exercise readers' mental faculties over the festive season here are six positions from games by The Spectator's player of the year, Nigel Short. They are either positions which actually occurred in his games or cropped up as possible variations. There will be prizes of Professor Nathan Divinsky's Chess Encyclopaedia kindly donated by B. T. Batsford for the three best entries which should reach me at The Spectator (marked 'Chess Competition') no later than Monday 6 January. The Spectator's decision will be final and no correspondence will be entered into concerning the results. The winners' names will be published in the issue of 18 January. In each diagram the puzzle is to find the best continuation and to back it up with the necessary analysis.
Short, London 1982. Black to play. Rotterdam 1989. White to play. 1) This is a variation from Miles — 2) This position is from Short — Nunn, 3) This is a variation from Short — Tim- man, Tilburg 1991. White to play.
6) This is a variation from Short — Ljubojevic, Linares 1991. White to play.
