and Downey.)—Mrs. Macquoid is not equal to herself in this story. It seems to us highly improbable from beginning to end ; while it does not possess compensating qualities in intensity of interest. There is, it is true, a surprise in the cldnouement of the tale, but it is not effective, so remote is the whole thing from life, —at least, from life as it exists under present conditions.
