Winter of Tory Discontent SIR,—Mr. Maude seems to think that the Conserva- tive party should neglect to observe the deep dichotomy existing in at least three important con- temporary matters. I am myself neither a member of the Monday Club nor a member of the Bow Group.

These dichotomies are:

1. Prices and Incomes: On my left Mr. Reginald Maudling, MP, supporting the need for prices and incomes policy: on my right Mr. Enoch Powell, MP, for the free market: never the twain shall meet.

2. Educational Comprehensiveness: On my left Sir Edward Boyle, MP, Tory spokesman for educa- tion and science, supporting Mr. Anthony Crosland, MP, Minister of Education, in all but speed: on my right the majority of the Conservative party opposing universal comprehensiveness and believing devoutly in widest possible diversification of educa- tional opportunities, both public and private: never the twain shall meet.

3. Rhodesia: On my left Mr. Harold Wilson, MP, leading thirty-one Tory MP oil sanctioneers into the anti-Rhodesia lobby: on my right the expec- torating Mr. Anthony Fell, MP, and more than fifty of his friends in the Tory parliamentary party: never the twain shall meet.

Does Mr. Angus Maude really believe that Con- servative politicians can argue contemporary prob- lems on public platforms, on radio and television, without cognisance of these deep divisions?

None of these matters reflects one iota on the leadership of Mr. Edward Heath, MP, which has been talented and objective during the few months since he took over. Mr. Angus Maude's inferences concerning the leadership are quite unjustified. If he has no confidence in his leader, he should storm off the Opposition Front Bench as he stormed out of the Tory parliamentary party a few years ago.
