SIR,—At a time when party unity is so essential, it
hardly befits Mr. Angus Maude to write such an outrageous article (SPECTATOR, January 14). What does he hope it will achieve? Will it help us to win the forthcoming by-election at North Hull? Will it help us to be victorious at the next general election? Will it strengthen party unity over Rhodesia? Nothing of the kind; quite the reverse!
What Mr. Maude should have pointed out is that we have a magnificent leader in the form of Mr. Heath, that we have a magnificent shadow govern- ment (Mr. Maude excluded), that we have sound and sensible policies, that we have a solution to the Rhodesian crisis (I refer you to Sir Alec Douglas- Home), that the present Socialist administration is getting nowhere fast, that the Labour party is split upon practically every major - issue of the day (Rhodesia included), and so on.
Otherwise, I suggest Mr. Heath relieves Mr. Maude of his front-bench post, and that the execu- tive council of the Stratford-upon-Avon Conserva- tive party decides to look for alternative candidates to replace Mr. Maude at the next election.
