Sir: It would, I suggest, be better to refer to
history rather than to Mr A. J. P. Taylor (Let- ters, 14 March) for a ruling on the use of 'British.' This is no mere Roman relic but quite simply the only legal designation for our two Peoples, laid down by the Act of Union of 1707. Unlike Mr Bennett (Letters, 14 March) most of us in Scotland, as indicated by such plebiscites as we have been allowed to hold, hope that this unfortunate, but at present cor- rect, designation, may soon cease to be applicable.
