Our Spring Books lead this week—Sylvia Townsend Warner on The Verneys of Claydon —gets off to a fine period start with a recipe for ink : `To make Inke. Four ounces of Gaules Two ounces of green Copperice one ounce and half of Gum Arabick : break the Gaules : the Gum and Copperice must be beaten in a Morter & put into a quart of white wine or Strong Stale beer (or as others say Smaller beer least it grow to thick) with a little double refined Suger : it should be stood in a Chimney Corner for a fortenight at least & be well shaken twice or thrice a day the longer its Kept the Better.'

Competitors are invited, in similar fashion, to supply the necessary methods and ingredients for making one of the following : a pop star, a United States of Europe, an 'experimental' novel, a Liberal victory at the next election. Entries (maximum 100 words) must be in, marked 'Competition No. 545,' by 31 March.
