The illusion of growth
Sir: How pleasant to read Christopher Booker's article (7 March) in which he arrives at the conclusion that the present world crisis is a result of the 'growth' economy coming to a logical impasse due to decreasing resources and energy. Unfortunately he made one sweeping generalisation which, in the nature of such statements, was incorrect. He says the belief in economic growth is 'the one thing which ultimately unites all our political parties from Mrs Thatcher to the Militant Tendency'.
One national party — the Ecology Party — has as its central belief the idea that economic growth is a dead-end policy and that the faster we come to terms with this idea the better for the whole of mankind. I believe I am right in saying that the Ecology Party is the fastest growing one in Britain, so Mr Booker is clearly not alone in his conclusions.
