[To the Editor of the SPECTATOR.] Sui,—The case of Dr.
Axham has revived a very considerable public interest, and for that reason statements in regard to it should be accurate. Mr. Joseph Griffiths, in your recent issue, states that the G.M.C. have no power to replace the name of Mr. F. W. Axham on the Medical Register, unless he qualifies by a re-examination. This is hardly correct. The General Medical Council have the power to rescind the resolution to erase his name, and they have the power to restore it upon an application by him ; but he has clearly stated he will not do this. As an alternative an application or a petition can be presented on his behalf, and if the doctors who petitioned for the recognition of Mr. (as he was then) Herbert Barker were to act similarly for Mr. F. W. Axham, there is no doubt in the circumstances that such a fraternal act would not only be justifiable but would be successful, and give wide satisfaction.—I am, Sir, &c., ROBERT ARMSTRONG-JONES.
