Sport rules — not OK
From Mr Luke Fraser Sir: As a proud Australian, I enjoyed Simon Barnes's article on Ian Thorpe (Sport, 23 September). But I've been living in fear of catching green-and-gold Olympic lurgy. At some distant point, Australians realised they were bloody good at sport, and we've been making the most of it since, regardless of cost. When our dollar is at a record low and investors see Australia as-an 'old' economy, when the matter of our continuing inability to co-exist effectively with the Aboriginal race still lies unresolved, our Prime Minister spends two weeks in the grandstands cheer- ing our sporting prowess. Cabinet meetings were postponed, and even the visiting head of Sun Microsystems couldn't get a guernsey for a chat on investment with the PM.
So while you will remain envious of our sporting talents, take comfort that we are paying a heavy price for our abilities to flap about in a pool.
