Floreat Radio
Sir: I suppose I should be grateful that Michael Vestey's equivalent of pouring a pint of beer over my head is limited to words, to asserting that John Birt and I nei- ther recognise nor value the BBC's past and to suggesting that BBC Radio is to be marginalised (Arts, 7 September). Both comments are untrue.
You've put on a bit of weight'
We do believe in efficiency; but the whole point of past and future organisa- tional change to the BBC is to make money available for producing more, and better, radio and television programmes. BBC Radio in particular, which monopolised the Sony radio awards earlier this year, and is performing strongly in the ratings, is con- tinuing to flourish, in spite of 'the cruel vol- canic tidal wave of suits'. And who made and broadcast the excellent programme that triggered Michael Vestey's admiring reminiscences about Reggie Smith?
