Laborious conclave
And out of it all, who will emerge the victor? One certain factor: the Board is now desperately anxious to get a new editor as soon as possible, if only to regain control of the paper, and its editorial and correspondence columns in particular, from Dick Crossman. The Chapel Three are aware of this, of course. Two very important considerations, neither of them relevant to the job particularly but both of them relevant to the peculiar circumstances, now arise: the new editor must be acceptable to the Chapel; and, he must be available.
It is small wonder, therefore, that El Vino's had concluded last week, much in the way that Vatican experts usually pick the winner even before the Conclave as sembles, that former favourite Anthony Howard will emerge, with or without a puff of white smoke, as the successor to Crossman. The question then will be, after Crux has gone, crucified, whether his successor will still choose to call himself Crucifer, carrying the burden of the ct oss.
