Rylands, a collection of essays by George Rylands with an introduction by Lord Rothschild.
Only available through The Spectator, this limited edition of 170 numbered copies costs £25.00 plus £2.00 for post and packing.
Lord Rothschild writes:
In my introduction to Rylands I used the phrase to 'hear the music of the spheres'. I used this phrase in a somewhat idosyncratic way: to mean inspiration, intuition, and poetic imagery. Many others, of course, have heard that music: Ramanujan with his Partitions, Cezanne with his Card Players, Dirac with his equation of the electron and, of course, all those who are the subjects of Rylands' brilliant essays in this book. There were comparatively young men when they heard the music. But there were exceptions like Renoir and Hilbert (yes, yes, I know he did better work when he was young, but he was still at the top when he was old). But Rylands is the greatest exception. He was 85 when he wrote these essays. No one who reads this book can fail to agree that Rylands still hears the music of the spheres.
Even 'those who know, or think they know, much about Spenser, Shakespeare, Donne, Milton and Housman will learn more — how to think and write about these geniuses — from Rylands.
One essay in this book seems to me better than all the rest. I wonder if you will agree as to which it is.
