Wrong inferences
Sir: I respect Mr Wythe's contempt for my belief that MPs need somewhat more than the glory to sustain them in a political career. But I must correct two mis- statements of fact in his letter.
First, it was not Bill Deedes who wrote the leader about MPs' pay in the Daily Telegraph, to which I referred in the Spectator Diary. Mr Wythe drew the wrong inference from my remark that it was written by 'a distinguished former MP'.
Second, there is not the remotest justi- fication for Mr Wythe's assertion that the Daily Telegraph has given encouragement or comfort in its leaders to Mr Peter Wright. We have persistently deplored Wright's behaviour, and have merely sought to question the lengths to which the legal process in this country can go to silence him, without making the law appear ridiculous.
