Greasy Joan

Sir: The Spectator has been allowed to float for some long time.

If Veronica Orme's foul saga (July 1) is an indication that your magazine has found its level then your circulation manager will need comfort and understanding during the coming months.

I do not criticise 'When greasy Joan doth keel the pot' — I criticise your choice of it.

Waugh and Macpherson must be all that reprieves you in so many households. More oh more of the clear, unfrilled thinking of the splendid 'Dictator for London' and less, please less, flimsy trivia.
