Misleading article

Sir: In his Diary (15 July), Peregrine Worsthorne attacks Freddie Ayer for asking to be re-elected to the Garrick Club after hearing that his wife (my mother) was dying of cancer, 'on the grounds that he would soon be in need again of somewhere to dine in convivial company'. Mr Wors- thorne's story is true, but misleading. My mother was anxious that my stepfather would be lonely after her death, and his telephone call to Perry was made at her urging.
