Sir: You properly criticised (Leading arti- cle, 8 July) Mr
Gerald Kaufman's objec- tion that if you took the Hong Kong people, you might have to take white British passports holders from 'racist' South Africa. To your accusations of 'sheer untruth, ludicrous ingenuity and reptilian morality' you should perhaps add appalling ignorance. The problem for Hong Kong residents is that they have a special class of colonial British passport which does not entitle them to residence in Britain; it is most unlikely that Her Majesty's Govern- ment has taken it upon itself to issue these in South Africa. Unless Mr Kaufman knows something I don't, British passport holders in South Africa, like British pass- port holders in London, are entitled to live in Britain anytime they please.
