British Almanac and Companion, 1873. (Stationers' Company.)— This is certainly

as complete and as valuable a hook of the kind as is published. It contains, besides all the information usually found in almanacs, some essays of considerable literary and scientific merit on interesting subjects of the day. Mr. Proctor, for instance, contributes an excellent paper on "The Sun and Recent Solar Discoveries." Among other articles may be mentioned those of Mr. George Dodd on "The Light- house System of the British Islands," Mr. Axon's on "Learned Societies and Academies," and Mr. A. Locker's on "Fine-Art Workmanship ,of the International Exhibition of 1872, and the Walter Press." In the vast domain of scienc e and art it is of course impossible to do more than touch on isolated points. In Part II. of the " Companion " more completeness can be aimed at and obtained. Here we have Mr. James Thomas's account of Architecture and Public Improvements," an account of " Metropolitan Charities at the Present Day," a " Table of All the Public Acts of Parliament, 1872," with an abstract of the more important. Then come a chronicle of events and an obituary.—The Commercial Law Annual. 1873 (Cate), may be mentioned as having a special value for the class for which it is intended.—We have also to mention the Calendar of University College, London, 1872-3 (Taylor and Francis).
