The Bhutto degree
Sir: I read with great interest Professor Trevor-Roper's sober analysis of the motives and antics of those who successfully plotted to deny Mr Bhutto his degree (March 15). Professor Trevor-Roper's reference to Mrs Gandhi and the Indian government's policy of extermination of Nagas no doubt had to be said and who could have said it better than the Regius Professor of Modern History of Oxford?
As to the degree of credulity, anyone who regards Nehru family as socialists will swallow anything if it is served with liberal lashings of emotion-laden but politically-motivated rhetoric.

Sir: Professor Trevor-Roper (March 15) describes Congregation as the 'Parliament' of Oxford University. It is not: it is only, if you like, the House of Lords or the Cabinet. The Convocation composed of all Masters of Arts as opposed to Congregation composed of teaching members, has at least as much right to a say on who should or who should not be awarded an honorary degree, particularly as many of its members are in closer touch with the feelings of the community at large and with the outside world of practical affairs generally.
