Who gets the chair ?
Sir: Hugh Trevor-Roper (Letters, 15 Novem- ber) states: 'Miss Starkie claims that her high- pressure methods once gave us W. H. Auden as Professor of Poetry' (Letters, 8 November). Will you kindly ask him to quote the words of my claim so that your readers may judge the truth of his statement. If he cannot do this will you please insist that he withdraws his state- ment and apologises to me for accusing me of something I did not, in any way, claim. May refresh.your memory as to what I actually wrote on 8 November: . . it was W. H. Auden who was victorious on that occasion and [that] it was precisely the methods of election which permitted him to be appointed after a "tough" campaign.'
The only place in the letter where I am per- sonally involved is in the signature.
