Dream Cricket Ideal conference bedtime reading is something as far
away from politics as possible. I took with me to Brighton •John Arlott's admirable Rothman's Jubilee History of Cricket 1890-1965 (Arthur Barker, 21s.), so that I thought about politics all day and dreamed about cricket all night. I even found myself playing once more the schoolboy game of the best World NI— taking the same years as Arlott--to play Mars.
My side, in batting order, is Grace, Hobbs, Bradman, Trumper, Hammond, Keith Miller, Sobers, Rhodes, Godfrey Evans, Lindwall, Barnes. I am deaf to arguments about the first five and Barnes, and almost certain about Rhodes. The other four have many rivals. For example, instead of Miller you could choose from Ranji, Clem Hill, Woolley, Denis Comp- ton and, probably now, Graeme Pollock. Then I. would like to have Trumble or O'Reilly, but I can only do this at the expense of Sobers. It seemed to me in my dreams the ideal side, 'as of now,' as the Americans say. Any challengers?
