Jonathan Aitken Resisting the temptation to comment on the speeches
in favour of the Salisbury addendum to the Rhodesia motion debated last Friday at Brighton, I concentrate on the speech by Jonathan Aitken against it. Few speeches made from the floor sway opinion on such a subject, yet this one did. It made a deep impression on the platform as well and was singled out for special mention by Mr. Heath. It came at a moment when the debate might have become tempestuous, and it was an adroit mixture of gravity and charm. I know of no young man who could have done better. He is the great- nephew of the late Lord Beaverbrook and the Beaver would 'surely have chuckled at the irony of the decisive speech. on Rhodesia coming from an Aitken. Jonathan has a majority of only 363 to overcome at Meriden where he is prospective parliamentary candidate. It will be good to see him in the House.
