Bad show

Sir: I don't know how old Steven Erlanger is, nor do I know anything about his physical condition: indeed, I don't even know who he is, and after reading his contribution (`Incident on the train', 8 October) I'm glad I don't. For, if it was intended as a comment on current social behaviour, it said more about his inadequacy as a human being than it did about that of the other protagonists in his little scene. Perhaps he might have utilised the energy he spent on writing about it in making a protest, even if meant a bloody nose. Who knows, maybe his example might have inspired the others, if only verbally, to see that justice was done and seen to be done.

If he is elderly or infirm, I excuse him from making a physical gesture, but he can presumably speak as well as write, and offhand I can think of a number of things he could have done. Perhaps he could start by sending his fee to a club for Asian boys.
