The Great Western arrived at Southampton yesterday, bringing West India
and Pacific malls—six days over-due. This delhy has caused much unpleasant feeling. The latest dates are Jamaica- 27th March, St. Thomas 2d April. The Jamaica Council had thrown out the Retrenchment Bill which provided for a uniform reduction of all public salaries by 20 per cent. In consequence of this, it was thought the House of Assembly would pass no revenue bills without strict appropriation clauses, directing the use of the money. But there were other resources, such as the per- petual revenue of ld. per acre, which would provide for the omitted branches of the public service. The yellow fever had nearly disappeared from the islands. It was reported that gold had been discovered in Jamaica.
Emigrants continued to arrive in British Guiana from the East. The Combined. Court had provided for the continuance of immigration, and had requested the Governor to make arrangements with the Home Secre- tary of State to secure the importation of at least 4000 such immigrants atmuallY.
