Reviews reviewed
Sir: Your columnist, Taki (High life, 25 November) reports that Alice Mayhew of the New York publishing firm, Simon & Schuster, had objected to his work on ideological grounds, which prompted him to pull his contract. The more radical Mr William Shawcross (2 December) writes that he had experienced no such ideologic- al difficulties with the lady. When my last book, The Closed Circle, landed on her desk, she told me that it would have to reverse its opinions if she was to publish it. Like Taki, I preferred to pull the contract.
The reviewer's copy of The Closed Circle was sent from your office, Sir, to a review- er with a long personal animus against me, and so effectively was Mayhewised in your columns.
