Enoch Powell

Sir: One positive proof that the recent Conservative Government, particularly its leader, is 'out of touch' was given us on the evening of February 7 when the PM on TV was asked by Robin Day: Did he not think Mr Enoch Powell's resignation would lose Conservative votes? Mr Heath replied somewhat contemptuously, "Of course not. Mr Powell can do what he likes!" This strange administration, a mixture of one man's own policies and very little pure Conservative policies, its U-turns, its broken promises, has at last found a way to rid themselves of their best man. Mr Powell is a man of honour. We have in consequence of this frightful mess lost him. I fear on February 28 the Conservative Party will miss the hard work Enoch Powell gave to his country that day in June 1970 when he undoubtedly won the election for Mr Heath.

Mr Heath and Mr Barber and others will soon ponder on their treatment of this great patriot.

An English gentleman. We in the county of all parties will miss him greatly.
