Sir: At this moment of intermission in the parliamentary career

of Mr Enoch Powell. may I be permitted to place on record my thanks and appreciation for all he has done on behalf of Britain.

His decision not to seek re-election for Wolverhampton South West is as worthy as is the man. Moreover it is undoubtedly a valuable guide as to how I should vote — or rather why I am unlikely to vote — on February 28.

It has only needed one day of the election campaign to convince me that neither Mr Heath, with his lofty contempt towards anyone who disagrees with him, nor Mr Wilson, with his gimmicky off-the-cuff approach, has the integrity or ability to lead 'one nation'.

When viewed alongside the current Political leadership, and in particular the inept and incompetent ragbag administration of Mr Heath, one appreciates just how great the political qualities of Enoch Powell are: his honesty, his clear logic and — in spite of the smear campaign by the media to discredit him — his absolute credibility.

But above all I salute Mr Powell for his patriotism. Nowhere has this been seen to better effect than in his efforts to restore to the nation the sovereignty discarded to the European Economic Community by Mr Heath, and by Mr Thorpe and the Jenkinsite elite of the Labour Party.

On this issue, as in no other, it has been Mr Powell who has represented and reflected the true feelings of the British people. What a tragedy that so few other Tory MP's had the courage ot their convictions to stand firm with him. Long may he remain the voice of sanity in this troubled land.
