Taking us out
Sir: In the final paragraph of your leader (June 16) you say in reference to the Common Market, " Heath will assuredly keep us in for good, Wilson will probably take us out."
I absolutely agree that the present government will keep us in the Market, which I personally consider will in time be a very excellent arrangement both politically and militarily. But I cannot fathom on what grounds you can possibly assume that, "Wilson will probably take us out."
It seems to me that you have no reason at all to suppose anything of the sort. Mr Wilson has talked of 'renegotiation' and it is possible, even probable, that some kind of smoke screen would be developed on these lines, in the unlikely event that next time round we have a Labour government, but it is my opinion that any government lead Jpy Mr Wilson will keep us in. This is only my opinion, but your statement also is only an opinion and one based on a very dubious premise, with absolutely no basis in fact to support it.
Whereas an expression of opinion by me is taken notice of by my acquaintances only, such an expression of opinion made Ily.you, baseless and highly implausible though it is, may quite easily seem plausible to the mass of your less intelligent subscribers. Which seems a pity. Nicholas Twells 9 Connaught Mews, London W2
