LOAN EXHIBITION OF OLD MASTERS.—Considering the high standard of the fine selection of old masters that the nation is so fortunate in having in the National Gallery, one would have thought that any private exhibition would, in comparison, be lacking in interest. It comes as all the greater surprise, therefore, to find that this Loan Exhibition at Agnew's Gallery, 43 Old Bond Street, on behalf of the Royal Northern Hospital, contains some of the best and most interesting pictures in the country. There is scarcely one picture which does not come up to the standard of the official collection. Two powerful little pictures alone, which are exhibited here; would have been sufficiently interesting to make a -visit worth while : one, The Deposition from the Cross (33), by Roger Van Der Weyden, and the other of a similar subject (30) by Jan Prevost, both of which represent the Flemish School of the fifteenth century. Another picture which shows at its best the typical and powerful angularity of composition practised by these early Flemish masters is The Portrait of Aegidius (3), by Quentin Matsys. There are also, amongst others, good examples of the work of Frans Hals, Signorelli, Giovanni Bellini, Vandyck, Verspronck, Reynolds, and Lorenzo Lotto.

POSTERS BY E. MCKNIGHT KAUFFER AT 60 GOWER STREET. —Not only does the quality and variety of the posters in this retrospective Exhibition organized by the Arts League of Service render criticism more or less futile, . but the critical notes which the artist has .added to the catalogue disarm the critic completely. Through these analytical notes on each phase of his development Mr. Kauffer has also managed, with the soundest of judgment, to give standards for poster re- quirements, which should be very helpful to the business man when he comes' to the choosing of a design to advertise his goods, and to the public in the development of their appre-
