Frank's good deed
Sir: Among the eulogies to Frank Sinatra and the many accounts of his bad connec- tions and misdeeds, I would like to add the following story, which presents a very dif- ferent and little-known side of his charac- ter. During 1966 I was working as private secretary to him on a film he was making in London, The Naked Runner. As usual, he turned on the 6 o'clock television news and saw a report about an elderly and frail cou- ple in Essex whose home had been savagely robbed and vandalised.
Their address was traced and that same evening Sinatra's chauffeur drove down to Essex with a considerable sum of money in a plain envelope as a gift to put right the damage caused to the couple's house and to replace everything that possibly could be replaced. This act was anonymous and they could have had no way of knowing the identity of their silent benefactor.
