NEWS OF THE WEEK.

T"preoccupation of the week has been the crisis at Versailles. On Monday General Changarnier proposed that the Assembly should formally censure M. Gambetta's speech at Grenoble, and the Duc de Broglie, in support of him, demanded that M. Thiers should definitively separate himself from the Left. The President there- upon mounted the Tribune, and in two eloquent and excited speeches declared that he would give no such pledge, that his.life was his guarantee, that the attack was not aimed at M. Gambetta, but at the Governmenefitat the Pact of Bordeaux must be dis- cussed, and that for himself, he believed the country was with him, and be should have no fear in allowing it to decide. In spite of these speeches the Due de Broglie proposed an order of the day censuring M. Gambetta for his speech, without expressing confi - deuce in the Government. Thereupon U. Mettetal of the Left Centre proposed an amendment censuring M. Gambetta, but acknowledging the energy of the Government, which was accepted by M. Dufaure, and passed by 267 to 117. M. Thiers, considering that a vote of -only 267 on his side out of 750 was equivalent to a vote of no con- fidence, threatened to resign ; and the rest of the week has been occupied by negotiations for a compromise, which up to Friday had not been completely successful.
