The reception of the German Emperor in Milan has been

a success, the spectaclehaving so impressed even the Emperor himself that he telegraphed his amazement at the scene to the Empress Augusta. Milan, now that the square of the Dnomo is Cleared, is the very city for a grand scenic display, and all Lombardy seems to have come in frcim its rice-fields and corn-lands. The welcome was enthusiastic, and was only broken by the fact that the five thou-

sand French residents of Milan quitted the city to a man before the Emperor's arrival. The Millennium has not arrived, but still the illumination was amazing.
