An Elementary Treatise on Heat. By W. Garnett, B.A. (Deighton,

Bell, and Co.)—This comparatively new branch of science has not had so successful an elementary expositor in its history as it now finds in Mr. Garnett. Such works as Professor Maxwell's or Balfour Staart's are of course standard authorities for the whole science of the subject, as at present demonstrated, but it is not always requisite to go through such a large amount of reading as these works presuppose. Whoever wishes to get a clear and concise account of the laws of heat, and how they affect nature generally, will find all they require in this unpre- tending volume, and for examination purposes and an introduction to the larger treatises it will be invaluable. The latest discoveries are included—such as the scientific reasons for the behaviour of Mr. Creokes's radiometer—and the mathematical part is simple and lucid.
