The Legislative Council of Jamaica has recently voted a sum
of £3,000 to assist in advertising the island as a resort for health and pleasure, and the business community in the island is also contributing. It is a deplorable fact that the attractions of the West Indies are but little realized in Great Britain and, in this respect, the Mother Country would do well to emulate the example of the United States. Every winter many thousands of Americans set out for the "Queen of the Antilles" and the other islands of the Caribbean. In fairness to the British travel- ling public it must be admitted that the United States have the advantage of proximity and of frequent steamship com- munication; nevertheless, there must be many thousands of well-to-do Englishmen who could afford the necessary couple of months or ten weeks to visit the British West Indies and the Spanish Main. It is to be hoped that the action of the Legislative Council of &Mak& will be copied by British Guiana, Barbados, Trinidad and the other islands, and that they will make a special attempt to attract British travellers.
