News at Waterloo
Sir: The passage about the illuminated moving sign at Waterloo Station which appeared in the Skinflint column of the September 9 issue has been brougt to my attention and I am extremely annoyed to read such an inaccurate piece of reporting.
First of all, the newscaster is not owned by the Thomson Organisation, and has not been for several years: it is in fact owned by this company which is an independent private company. As I am sure you will realise, this inaccuracy could be embarrassing to both Thomson's and to Fleet.
Furthermore, while the news item was edited fairly well, the advertisement which followed it was distorted for what I assume was intended for humorous reasons so as to give a completely inaccurate account of what actually appeared. The actual message was as follows: "Australia — A Place to Live. If you wish to enquire about life, conditions and opportunities in Australia, call at Australia House, Strand, or ring 01-836 2435, Australia — A Place to Live."
I realise that if you precede this message with the news item as reported, your passage loses its humour. However, I feel that you owe it to your readers to provide them with accuracy above all else. S. C. ribbons 6 Eton Road, Harlington, Hayes, Middlesex
