Synaesthesia

Sir: Regarding Tom Pilkington's letter (16 September) I think he will find that there are many others who see the days of the week in colour.

Back in 1971 when I was studying with the Open University and we were asked to comment on Kandinsky's colour theories, I conducted my own small experiment with the family. As we all `saw' the days of the week in colour the interest lay in similar- ities and the possibility of producing a universal Language of Colour.

The results were in some respects simi- lar. Sunday, white, but probably through association. Wednesday, three different shades of green, and Saturday, biscuit, buff and pale-brown. But that was in only three cases. The fourth list gave Wednesday as purple, Saturday, silvery/white and Sun- day, gold/orange! No agreement. The lan- guage of colour theory was exploded.
